This is the simplest example of a covalent chemical bond. An example is hydrochloric acid (HCl), in which hydrogen and chlorine atoms form a single covalent bond. There are numerous larger covalent compounds with several atoms originating from different elements. We can describe the arrangement of all their bonding and non-bonding valence electron pairs through a Lewis structure. Each atom in the structure will have a certain preferred total number of covalent bonds formed.

Vitamin C is both a covalent compound and an organic compound. It is composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms.There is a ring unit of 4 carbon atoms and 1 oxygen atom. Attached to this ring are several substituents. Based on organic chemistry, a molecule of vitamin C contains alcohol, alkene and ester functional groups. The Lewis structure is shown below. Each carbon atom maintains a total of 4 covalent bonds. Each hydrogen atom has 1 covalent bond. Each oxygen atom has 2 covalent bonds. Each oxygen atom also has 2 pairs of non-bonding valence electrons, which are omitted in the Lewis structure shown below:
